This is how it could look like in (a probably distant) future…

  1. Some free games are not worth playing. Is this game any good?

  2. Hi. In my opinion this game (which is under work btw) has two ‘issues’: the graphic in ascii (which i don t really like) and the interface. Some people say this is amazing others just pass by. Considering it’s a free game, it’s harmless and it’s fast download (3,46 mb) my suggestion is to download and try for yourself cause you have nothing to loose.
    Bye.

Best world simulation ever, great game but very complex. You need to read a lot (wiki + forums) before you can achieve anything in this game.

Dwarf Fortress is incredible once you get past the learning curve and interface.

If you stick with it, you will be hitting keyboard shortcuts all day to check wounds, look in bins, issue workshop orders, everything. It’s just a little hill, but once you get over it, you will be awesomely rewarded if you are a strategy fan.

And if ascii bugs you too much, the custom tilesets can help

  5. This graphical release could really help me get into the game. I love the theory and strategy behind it, but the ASCII version was like trying to read the Matrix.

Stonsense has been released, which allows you to view your fortress in real-time isometric graphics (ala that ‘distant future’ picture this page provides)

You have to learn the game. When you do, you’ll love it. Nothing beats killing a dragon with a thrown sock because it happened to hit the weak spot in his head.

    I totally agree with Ziggy.

I use the Mayday version of Dwarf Fortress, which is graphical, and way easier to understand than the ASCII version.

This game isn’t like all other traditional games. There are a lots of things to learn, a lots of things to do and manage. The Wiki will be your best friend and provides nice tutorials to start a fortress.

To offer an example, it took me 2 month of occasional play to start to understand the *basics* of the gameplay.

But once it’s understood, this game is just *the best* game ever made by a human being (or by a Toad?).

It really worth the efforts !

Very good game, but absolutely hostile to new players.
