Battlefield 2 Open Source is an unofficial, community-driven project that has reverse‑engineered and rebuilt the 2005 classic shooter Battlefield 2 into a fully open‑source version, with the goal of recreating the original game’s functionality while making its source code publicly available

Developed by modder LifeCoder after about eight years of work, this project reconstructs both the client and dedicated server of Battlefield 2, aiming for full compatibility with existing clients, servers, and mods — including the Special Forces expansion.

The current build already supports 64‑bit servers for Windows, with plans for native Linux and macOS versions, and can connect to older servers or the BF2Hub service.

The source code will be released under the GPLv3 license on GitHub, alongside downloadable builds with automatic updates. This open‑source approach removes reliance on the original Windows executable, disables PunkBuster, and allows the community to modify, improve, and expand the game without official restrictions

Battlefield 2 Open Source is a fan‑made, open‑source revival of the original game, preserving its multiplayer experience while enabling modern OS support, mod compatibility, and community‑driven development.
